This morning Mark, Tim, and Kieran left soon after 7 AM to drive for two hours to Volcano National Park to see the Kilauea crater. I decided I didn't want to spend four hours in the car today, so I'm hanging out here catching up on this journal and enjoying some time alone. I'll mention a few of the interesting creatures I have seen here: the mongooses seem to be as common as squirrels, and are somewhat similar but more elongated. I haven't gotten near one so I don't know how shy they are. There are cute green lizards all over, with red markings on their backs. I have seen some pretty little birds, one mostly yellow, the other black with white and red around the chest and face. This morning I saw a reddish centipede right on the condo carpet, so I made Tim pick it up and take it outside. The fish are too numerous to describe, but I liked one that seemed to be a loner with an attitude. While the other fish darted around with others of their kind, this one hung suspended in the water in one place, by himself, oblivious to the other fish and snorkelers. We got a laminated chart of the local fish, and this one is a Fantail Filefish.
